What You Need to Know Before You Start

Not sure if certification is right for you? First, read Part 1: “Do Coaches Need Certification?“.

If you’re considering becoming a coach, you’ve probably come across the term ICF coaching certification. This guide will walk you through what that means, why it matters, and how it can support your transition into full-time coaching—whether you’re shifting from a corporate role or building on years of professional experience.

What is ICF coaching certification?

ICF coaching certification refers to the credentialing system developed by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the most globally recognised authority in the coaching profession. It involves completing a structured coaching education, gaining practical experience, and passing a knowledge exam. An ICF coaching certification sets a professional benchmark that signals your readiness and commitment to coaching. The ICF defines core competencies and ethics that ensure consistency, impact, and trust across the profession. It also ensures that certified coaches use methodologies rooted in active listening, client-centred dialogue, and measurable goal setting.

Why do people choose ICF coaching certification over others?

ICF coaching certification is widely recognised in both individual and organisational markets. It offers international credibility and inclusion in a searchable coach directory. Many global companies and institutions prefer or require their coaches to be ICF credentialed. More than a certificate, this credential confirms that you meet rigorous standards in training, experience, and ethical practice. For coaches looking to work across borders or with diverse client populations, ICF coaching certification adds a level of portability and legitimacy that other programs may not. At ICE, we prepare our students for all aspects of this process—from education to exam to business readiness, including mentorship and peer practice.

What is ICF coaching certification?

What are the three ICF credential levels?

There are three levels of ICF coaching certification: ACC (Associate Certified Coach), PCC (Professional Certified Coach), and MCC (Master Certified Coach). Each level requires increasing levels of coaching education and experience. ACC starts with 60+ hours of training and 100 coaching hours. PCC requires 125 hours and 500 coaching hours. MCC, the highest level, involves 200+ hours of education and 2500 hours of coaching. In addition to education and experience, each level also includes performance evaluations and knowledge testing. ICE is accredited at all three levels and also supports credentialing in team coaching, which adds further depth and range to your coaching capacity.

How do I qualify for ICF coaching certification?

To qualify, you must complete an ICF-accredited coaching education program and document a required number of coaching hours. Most hours should be paid sessions, although reciprocal coaching—where two coaches exchange sessions—also counts. ICE supports this through a lifetime coaching community where members can build hours and relationships simultaneously. After completing your hours, you must also pass a standardised exam developed by the ICF. This online exam tests your knowledge of coaching ethics, competencies, and scenarios you may face as a practitioner. ICE provides exam preparation, including mock tests and feedback to help you feel ready.

Can ICF coaching certification help build my business?

Absolutely. While ICF coaching certification provides the professional foundation, building a successful coaching practice requires strategy, confidence, and visibility. That’s why ICE goes beyond education—offering business development modules, strength discovery workshops, and a structured Roadmap to Revenue to help coaches earn income while still in training. You’ll learn how to define your niche, structure coaching packages, market yourself authentically, and overcome internal blocks related to pricing or visibility. Together, these components make your practice credible, marketable, and financially sustainable. Having ICF coaching certification is often the reason clients choose you over someone else.

Maximize Your Coaching Impact

What makes ICF coaching certification a long-term asset?

Unlike short-term courses or weekend workshops, ICF coaching certification represents a long-term commitment to the profession. It requires continued learning and renewal every three years. This keeps your coaching skills sharp, ensures ethical standards, and positions you as a lifelong learner—qualities clients and companies value. With each renewal cycle, coaches are expected to complete continuing education (CCE) hours. ICE supports this by offering ongoing community events, content, and access to expert faculty—well beyond your initial training.
